By now, you may have heard the Contour Airlines is adding a new itinerary from St. Louis; Indianapolis! This gives you another easy option for weekend getaways and family vacations. We rounded up a list of five awesome things to do in Indianapolis to get you started on your vacation planning.
The Indianapolis Zoo
Located in White River State Park, the
Indianapolis Zoo is fun for all ages! It's actually an awesome three-in-one experience with an aquarium and botanical garden onsite, as well. See all your favorites, with elephants, zebras, rhinos, and many more being housed there, or make a visit during a special event or unique festival. You can even walk through their
Forest Habitat and see a plethora of beautiful birds flying overhead.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Home to the famous Indianapolis 500, the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a must-see on your trip! Head to one of their races or events or just visit the IMS Museum, the on-site museum that pays homage to the speedway and auto racing in general. You can also just go for a walk on the grounds of the speedway for free (except on race days).
Indiana State Museum
The
Indiana State Museum is also located in White River State Park. With exhibits focusing on the state's natural and cultural history, geology, native peoples, the Civil War, and more, there is definitely something new to be learned at this museum! You can even walk through an 'ice' cave to see what it would be like inside of a glacier. The best part? Active duty and retired service members receive free admission and their immediate family members receive $2 off their entry fee.
Soldier's and Sailor's Monument
Located in Monument Circle, the Soldier's & Sailor's Monument just might be Indianapolis' most important landmark. The limestone monument was completed in 1902 to commemorate the lives lost in the Civil War. There are many other memorials and monuments located nearby as part of the
Indiana War Memorials.
The Canal Walk at White River State Park
There is a lot to see and do at White River State Park where you can find two of the other items on our list, but let's not forget about the beautiful three-mile canal walk that offers great views of the main canal, downtown indianapolis, and the nature surrounding you. Walk to shops, restaurants, or just a comfortable spot to relax in the park.
