WSRA Blog 2019 Fall Activities Events

We’re not sure if you’re like us, but after Labor Day, we are officially ready for cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and pumpkin everything!

This is also one of our favorite travel seasons. We enjoy venturing out to find the best foliage - whether in Missouri or in other states, checking out great pumpkin patches with our families, or enjoying a football game on a Friday night or Saturday afternoon. Personally, we can’t think of anything better than a crisp, cool fall day after weeks of summer heat and humidity.

Those of us in the Fort Leonard Wood Region are usually lucky enough to experience the best fall weather without having to go anywhere. The region’s hills also show off their beautiful fall colors which set the tone for the whole season and provide a gorgeous backdrop for any outdoor activity.

Though we’ve shared our favorite fall festivals and activities on our blog before, this year, we thought we’d break it out and provide our top three favorite fall activities for families and our top three for couples, too. Almost all of them are right here in the Fort Leonard Wood Region.

Check out our list below for some helpful tips as you fill up your fall calendar and let us know what you think. Did we miss your favorite fall festival or do you have a tip you’d add to our list? Let us know in the comments below or by tagging us in a social media post!

Top 3 Fall Activities for Families

Celebration of Nations: This long-time Fort Leonard Wood Region event celebrates our region’s diverse community with a parade that includes bands, floats, and the flags of over 80 nations. Held in Rolla, your family can spend the day meeting those from around the world, sampling excellent food and drinks, and enjoying some of the great carnival activities. Don’t forget to grab a passport for your kids so they can get it stamped as they take a tour “around the world.”

Great Park Forest Balloon Race: This incredible annual event held in the same park where you’ll find the St. Louis zoo features hundreds of hot air balloons taking off and landing throughout the day. This free event has been held in the park since 1973 and makes a wonderful fall family event. This Local Legacy is something you won’t want to miss while you’re in the Fort Leonard Wood Region, so book your tickets for your flight to St. Louis for the weekend of September 20-21 now!

Area pumpkin patches: The Fort Leonard Wood Region is home to a number of great pumpkin patches with pumpkins grown on site. Many of them incorporate lots of other family-friendly activities, but you won’t want to miss traveling out to the fields to let your kiddos pick out their own big orange pumpkin. We recommend checking out Storie’s Pumpkin Patch and Uncle Buck’s Pumpkin Patch.

Top 3 Fall Activities for Couples

Haunted River Float - the Haunted River Float is a Fort Leonard Wood Region Halloween staple and can be a lot of fun for adults and couples to check out! While you’re in the area - either before or after your float - you can also check out the haunted corn maze that’s on site. Both can definitely be scary, so if you aren’t ready for your nightmares to come to life, you may want to skip this one. If you’re up for an adventure, you can check it out every weekend through the first weekend in October.

Fort Leonard Wood Oktoberfest - many military families spend some time in Europe, and even if you haven’t, this fun festival will allow you to enjoy some of Germany right in America’s heartland. Not only will they have great beer on tap, but you can also get a bratwurst and enjoy an awesome polka band. It makes for a fun night out for any couple! Mark your calendars for October 5 and plan to attend!

Q in the Lou - this famous St. Louis event combines our two favorite things: great music and great food! If you’re a barbeque fan and enjoy sampling lots of great varieties, there’s no way you can miss this event! Pitmasters from around the world come to compete and earn the title of “Legend.” And there’s more to this event than just great ribs! Don’t miss their extensive live music lineup that will let you turn a wonderful day of barbeque tasting into a fun night of dancing and enjoying your time in the Lou.
