The Incredible USO

We love the USO! Really, who doesn't? This amazing organization has volunteers around the globe and can bring a smile to a service member's face at any time.

Since Bob Hope entertained troops during World War II as part of a USO show, the USO team has found ways to reach service members and their families and make wherever they were a little more like home. Today is no different. The USO offers a wide variety of programs that seek to provide service members and their families with a dose of love and happiness. Check out a short list of their programs below:

United Through Reading - This amazing program connects deployed service members with their children. Service members can pick out a book, record themselves reading it in a private, comfortable space, and then the mini-DVD and book are sent home to the service member's family. Not only is this great for kids who are missing their parents, but these recordings become keepsakes that many families treasure for years.

Comfort Crew for Military Kids - This program is delivered through the school system and is aimed at different age groups of military children. The program seeks to give a boost of happiness and healthfulness to children who are dealing with difficult and stressful situations at young ages.

The Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families - If your family is able to attend one of these shows, I highly recommend it. These familiar characters help children understand and cope with the challenges of military life - like moving to a new place or having a parent go off to war. There are also DVDs and books based off the show that can be very beneficial for families.

Sesame Street

Operation That’s My Dress - This event helps military children headed to prom or military spouses headed to a ball find the perfect dress. The event includes a fashion show and much more - all attendees are also able to pick out a brand new dress for their upcoming occasion.

Baby Showers: USO and What to Expect Present Special Delivery - These special events help military members and family members celebrate their little one's upcoming or new arrival. Each family receives lots of awesome goodies and the USO encourages families to get to know each other better through fun games and yummy food.

Holiday Care Packages - Being away from friends and family, especially during the holidays, can be rough. The USO helps liven up the holidays by sending care packages that help service members decorate their current living and work areas to make it feel a little more festive and like home.

Operation Phone Home - Anyone who has ever had a family member or close friend deploy, understands the awesomeness that is the USO's Operation Phone Home program. Connecting family members so that they're able to hear each other's voices is crucial during deployment situations and the USO helps make this happen!

Care Packages - For service members who are deployed to remote locations and locations away from some basic services, USO care packages are a vital. Sometimes the USO also provides these when units return from deployments and some single Soldiers return home to an empty barracks room. They really provide service members with some basic hygiene products at crucial times.

Operation Birthday Cake (USO Pacific) - If your service member is deployed or serving in the Pacific region and you're looking for a special way to celebrate his or her birthday, contact the USO and ask about Operation Birthday Cake. This is a great way to make your service member's day special and let them know you care about them!

All of these incredible programs would never be possible without the USO's amazing volunteers! If you are able or are interested, the USO is often looking for volunteers. This is a great way to give back to this amazing organization and serve those who serve our great country!

Thank you to the USO and all you do for those of us in the Fort Leonard Wood Region and around the world!
